Coaching Centre Handwritten Notes Surface Chemistry
Surface Chemistry Notes Based on the IIT,JEE & NEET Examinations.
We Know that surface chemistry is the branch of physical chemistry which deal with phenomena/reaction taking place at the surface is known as the surface chemistry.
Majority these are three phenomena:-
(i) Adsorption
(ii) Colloids
(iii) Catalysts
Adsorption:- The phenomena of higher concentration of gas or solute at surface in comparison to bulk of solids substance is known as adsorption
Example:-
(a) adsorption of ink or surface of chalk.
(b) adsorption of moisture by silca get.
(c) adsorption of gases by charcol.
1- Dispersion Method:- In this method large particles are broken in to particles of colloidal dimension i.e Electrical disperson medium
2- Peptization method:- It is the process of conversion of freshly prepared precipitate into particles of collidal dimension is known as peptization and reagent used for this purposes is known as the peptizing agent.
Purification of collidal solution:-
Colloidal solution is formed by the above method contained source soluble impurities which decreases of the solution of solution so it has to be removed from collidal solution and process of removal of soluble impurities from collidal solution is known as the dialysis.
Application of adsorption:-
(a) Froth Floatation
(b) To create vaccum
(c) to control humidity
(d) Heterogenous catalysts
(e) In medicines
(f) To seprate mixture of inert gases
Lyophobic:-
Condensation Method:-
In this method small atom molecules are induced to combine together and form particles of collidal dimension.
Limitation:- Pt could not explain extent of adsorption at high temperature.
Electrical Double Layer Theory:-
Surface of collidal particles will acquire either positive and negative charge due to prefential adsorption of common ion carrying positive or negative charge to form first layer
