Kilani Fischer Synthesis And Rouff Degradation


Kilani Fischer Synthesis:-

Kilani discovered that when aldose can be coverted in to the epimeric aldonic acid which will have addition of carbon introduced by the addition of HCN (hrdrogen cyanide) further hydrolysis of epimeric cyanohydrins.

Steps Reaction Mechanism:-

  1. HCN
  2. Ba(OH)2 and H3O+
  3. Na-Hg,H20
Mechanism:-



Modified Kilani Fischer Synthesis :-

In aldonic acid which are not obtained by the cyanohydrins,further cyanohydrins are reduce and then hydrolysed to form aldose.

Step of the reaction:-

  1. Pd/BaSO4 in H2
  2. H20



Ruff Degradation :-

One carbon atom will be removed in this process.It involves oxidation of aldose to an aldonic acid using bromine water and then oxidative decarboxylation of aldonic acid to next lower aldose.
