Extraction of Metal Ions from Aqueous Solution

Extracted by using:-

  1. Imidazolium-based ionic liquids
  2. The alkali modified miswak
  3.  Extracted by using Imidazolium-based ionic liquids
Ionic liquids have some unique properties such as good solvating properties together with good thermal stability, miscibility with water and solvent, good extractability for various organic compounds and metal ions.

Imidazolium Ionic Liquids:-
  1. Ethyl-3-ethylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl imide]

  1. Dithiazone

It is used to form neutral metal-dithiazone complex with metal ions and then extracted from aqueous solution into ionic liquids. The ionic liquid methyl trioctylammonium chloride used to extract Zn2+ , Cd2+ , Fe2+ ions from the aqueous solution.
  • Methyl-3-octylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [OMIM+ ][BF4 - ]
Method: Aqueous solution of metal ions is treated with ionic liquid (1:1). The composition of the aqueous phase is then analyzed by “Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry”

Determination of Fe, Co, Ni from aqueous media using the alkali modified miswak

Miswak method is applied in sea, ground and contaminated water sample. AT-Miswak-F sorbent is utilized as an efficient sorbent for the extraction of Fe, Co, Ni metal ions from various samples.

“Sorbent is a material used to absorb or adsorb liquid or gases”

  1. Fe3+ , Co2+ , Ni2+ extracted at pH 3-7
  2. The surface of the AT-Miswak-F is positively charged at pH < 4.6 and the surface sites are negatively charged at pH > 4.6.
  3. The positive charge on the surface of the ATMiswak-F in acidic medium is due to the protonation of O-atoms of cellulose and lignin.
  4. AT-Miswak-F contains lactonic, carboxylic and phenolic groups.
  5. Confirmed by IR (L→MCT)
  6. The sorption of Fe3+ , Co2+ , Ni2+ on miswak fibers occurs rapidly according to anion exchange method.
  7. This kind of sorbent is suitable for the removal of metal ions from industrial waste water.
