Refraction of light :-
Change in direction of light wave when it travel from one medium to another medium.
Speed of light in vacuum= 3×10^8 m/s
To see the figure if the incident light will move rarer to the denser medium so incident light greater than the refractive light. If refracted Ray in denser medium will move to the rarer medium so incident ray will be less than the refracted ray.
Optical density is equal to the refractive index. The speed of light is inversely proportional to the refractive index. If we change in medium the speed of light and wavelength also change but frequency will be constant.
Laws of refraction :-
- The incident and reflected ray and normal are all lie in the same plane.
- Law of refraction is also known as Snell law.
Example of refraction of light :-
1- Explain why do star Twinkle ?
Twinkling of star is due to the atmospheric refraction because atmosphere has different layer, both layer have different density. The star light will travel in atmosphere different five layer so the person see the star in the earth it can see its apparent position of star but actual position star is different.
2-
Sun is visible about 2 minute before actual sunrise sun is visible about 2 minute after the actual consent because of atmospheric reprection the actual and apparent sunset is about 2 minutes
