DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS - A Deodorant is a substance applied to the body to prevent or mask body odour due to bacterial breakdown of perspiration in the armpits, groin, feet and other parts of the body. Antiperspirants are a subclass of deodorants. They prevent sweating typically by blocking sweat glands. Antiperspirants are used on a wider range of body parts, at any place where sweat would be inconvenient or unsafe, since unwanted sweating can interfere with comfort, vision, and grip (due to slipping). Deodorants allow sweating but prevent bacterial action on sweat, since human sweat only has a noticeable smell when it is decomposed by bacteria while the antiperspirants prevent sweating. Most of the early antiperspirants were made with aluminium salts, with aluminium sulphate and alum being most commonly employed. Chemical Requirements :- Cobalt(III)chloride Ammonium chloride Hydrogen peroxide HCl, Ammonia solution Distilled water Acetone. THEORY :- This is one of the oldest known complexof cobalt. Chloropentaamminecobalt (III) chloride i sthe dichromate salt of the coordination complex [Co(NH₃)₅Cl]2+.It is purple or pink, diamagnetic and water soluble salt.The salt is prepared with a two step process starting with oxidizing a solution of cobalt chloride and ammonia. 2 CoCl2 • 6H2O + 10 NH3 + 2HCl + H2O2 → 2 [Co(NH3)5(OH2)Cl3 + 12H2O This intermediate is then heated to induce coordination of one of the outer space chloride ligand. Aim :- PREPARATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF POTASSIUM TRIS OXALATO CHROMATE(III) TRIHYDRATE Apparatus :- Conical flask Watchman filter Oxalic acid Potassium dichromate Potassium oxalate monohydrate Ethanol Ice water bath. Chemical formula: - K3[Cr(C2O4)3].3H2O Reduction : - 14H++ Cr2O72-+6C2O42-+6e-→ 2Cr(C2O4)32-+7H2O Oxidation: 3C2O4 → 6CO2+6e- Overall Equation: K2Cr2O7+7H2C2O4+2 K2C2O4 → K3[Cr(C2O4)3]+6CO2+7H2O Procedure:- Mix 5g of oxalic acid in 10mL of water with potassium dichromate in a 25mL conical flask. A blue-black or dark blue mixture was formed and spontaneously warm up almost to boiling. Bubbles formation would be observed. After about 15 minutes, dissolve 2.10g of potassium oxalate monohydrate in the mixture. Heat the mixture for approx. 15 minutes. Let it cool down to room temperature. Now add 10mL of 95% ethanol and cool the mixture using ice bath for about 15-30 minutes. A dark green colore...
